What to expect from Puppy Preschool
Puppy preschool is highly recommended for all puppys between the ages of 8 and 16 weeks, regardless of how many animals are already in your family or your training experience. The objective of classes is to help your dog grow into a relaxed and well adjusted member of your family.
The small, controlled groups at puppy preschool provide an invaluable opportunity to socialize your puppy during a time when they are not yet able to go into public places. Classes are fun and interactive and your puppy may join after their 1st vaccination, this is usually given at 6-8 weeks of age. Below is a summary what to expect from Puppy Preschool.

Socialization
As your puppy is in a critical stage of development and learning it is important to provide new experiences (socialization) in a safe non-threatening environment. Learning to recognize your puppy’s body language will help to ensure all these new things are experienced by your pup in a positive way.
Socialisation also means exposure to anything new; such as events, sounds, voices, objects, surfaces, places etc. Meeting other puppies and their owners also teaches good manners and acceptable behaviour. Classes will explain how your puppy learns and reacts to the world around them, this is critical information for all dog owners.

Basic Training
Using positive reinforcement and motivation, puppy classes’ will show you how to quickly master basic commands such as ‘sit’, ‘stay’, ‘come’, ‘leave’, ‘off’ and ‘look’. The use of treats, toys and praise make training fun and rewarding. Puppies are never reprimanded or punished; classes will teach you how to control unwanted behaviour without damaging the relationship between you and your puppy.
Toilet training is also covered and with tips provided by your trainer you will be able to minimize accidents and react appropriately if your puppy does toilet inside the house.

Behavioural Advice
All your questions regarding your puppy’s behaviour can be answered in class, including how to manage normal puppy behaviour, such as:
- Chewing
- Biting & mouthing
- Jumping up on people
- Barking
- Inappropriate play

Health Information
Your trainer can provide general information regarding:
- Grooming
- Handling
- Teething
- Nail clipping
- Dental health
Detailed information regarding vaccinations, parasite control and nutrition tailored to your puppy’s individual needs is provided by our vet hospital.

What to bring to Puppy Preschool
- A flat collar and lead (no choker chains)
- A towel or mat for your puppy to sit on
- Plenty of food treats. Please do not feed your pup prior to class
- Your puppy’s favourite chew toy
- A grooming brush
If you have children it is highly recommended they learn how to train and look after your new puppy. Children over the age of 6 are encouraged to attend class under the supervision of a parent.
